SITE VISIT REFLECTION
15/12/2022
I am interning for the National Conflict Resolution Center, an organization that provides services and training that transform conflict into resolution. Today I had my site visit and got to meet the amazing NCRC team I would be working with. All of them were happy to have me there making me feel very welcomed. This is my first time working with a private organization and I feel very stoked about it. Apart from it being a welcoming for me, it was also an introduction to my orientation process that'll eventually have me ready to work in January. I was told that my task there would be to administrate and organize paperwork for them, I'm still not sure what type of paperwork, but it doesn't really matter because my objective was to join their organization and I did
PRE INTERNSHIP REFLECTION
Some of my hopes are to be able to feel comfortable in the work environment, gain as much experience possible, and hopefully be able to have that place as a possible job option if needed. Some of my concerns include being nervous and potentially not being able to work properly, or just not feeling comfortable at all. Although I feel like this is not going to happen because of the amazing/kind team I have, plus my mentor picked this option for me knowing that this could be the right place for me, and from the looks of it, it looks like it is. One of the things that made me realize NCRC was a good spot, was because of the profesionalism they work with and their objective as an organization. I feel like what they do is something many people will at some point find necessary to be a part of because of the amounts of conflicts happening on a regular basis, especially because it is a much cheaper and viable option than going into court to solve anything. I'm totally looking forward to working there and hope to learn many things.
FIRST WEEK IN
First week in was a simple week, it felt like I was being tested with easy tasks at first, for example, I was tasked with searching for a cabinet needed at the office of NCRC, I had to look for options and send them to my mentor. Second thing I was tasked with doing was to join a zoom meeting with my mentor with the intention of taking notes about any important information and then transcribing them into a professional format, I was getting an office assistant sort of vibes.
What type of work do you plan to do? What are your hopes for this project?
My internship focuses in creating a safe space for youth who are having a difficult time, this can either be due to substance abuse, physical abuse, or any unfortunate event that can lead to a problematic situation in a school environment. Some of the work that NCRC does in order to solve a situation like this is by creating events and activites for these youth in hopes of distracting them a bit in order to find a better pathway to follow along to. Since this is a legal process sent by the district attorney, there is much paperwork involved, which is where I would essentially become available to help with, by organizing paperwork, filling in information, doing system updates, data inputs and even working on publicity by using several apps such as canva and powerpoint to present and convey information. I hope I am able to learn more about the process involved in assisting these youth, enhance my creativity when using apps like canva when sharing a poster, and hopefully to gain general knowledge in an office enviroment.
SECOND WEEK IN
Internship Project
I still havent been able to discuss this with my mentor, but I have an idea. I beleive I would be able to create a sort of presentation explaining the Mediation process that the organization follows in order to solve a situation from top to bottom. My idea is to possibly include a case that had a rough journey with NCRC but then managed to come back better than ever, hopefully letting people know that NCRC is a dedicated organization that can handle about anything and make it better. This project would be very academic as I'd be using presentation apps and tools that I'm familiar with from school to share the process of cohesion and mediation made by NCRC.
What has surpised you most while working at your internship?
One of the things that really caught me off guard was the fact that my schedule kept changing depending on the upcoming events, so one day I'd be going in at 9 am other days at 11 am and so on, yet it always worked perfectly. Another thing that I found suprising was the amount of information that is shared when going into zoom calls and presentations, which is why I had to bring a notebook of my own to always take notes and have the information stored.
THIRD WEEK IN
What are social interactions like in your workplace?
My workplace environment is great, everyone is focused on their work yet sometimes they'll come up to me and start a conversation and make things more entertained. Although there are certain days where there is a higher workload than others, everyone still tries to keep a positive attitude and socialize. Socializing makes everyone feel better and work more efficiently, because it makes you feel like you're working with a friend/peer rather than just an unfriendly boss.
What are you thankful for in your internship experience?
First and foremost, I am thankful of the opportunity given by the organization for me to work there, and also for the hospitality and empathy that everyone works with, it feels as if everyone understands each other in their needs, either if someone can't make it, or they'll be late for some reason and they'll accomodate for them, speaks a lot about someone, and its great to be around with.
FOURTH WEEK IN
What advice would you give to a junior in high school who wants to pursue a career in the field of your internship?
My advice to any junior who wants to pursue a career in the NCRC mediation organization would firstly be to have an open minded mindset because NCRC works with many cases and there are various amounts of situations that have all sorts of things going on and you cant treat everyone equally. Secondly, to have some experience with computer apps because NCRC is all about making flyers with excel, making documents with word, and presenting with powerpoint. Third and ñast would be to care about the youth, there's no better feeling than actually wanting to help troubled people and being compensated for it, it's much better than just thinking about the monetary value.
Are you planning to continue working with your internship site or mentor after internship is over? If so, how did these plans develop? What will you be doing?
I seriously have considered working with NCRC after internship because of the great work environment there is, thanks to the kind, great people working there, and because the work I was given was actually enjoyable, it just felt like I was at the right place. I have considered the position of office assistant, as it was basically what I was doing, which is sealing cases, filling out folders, and in general just helping out with whatever is needed, and apparently it is very requested at the office.
